Felisa Yzaguirre, LM | Midwife
Felisa Yzaguirre is a Xicana partera/ midwife licensed in Texas. She was born and raised on lands of the Tigua of Ysleta del Sur Pueblo. Known as the vast desert that unites El Paso, TX, and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, along the Rio Grande River. She made her way to Tonkawa land in 2008 to attend the University of Texas at Austin. After earning her Bachelor’s in Developmental Psychology she was blessed to be pregnant but found herself unsatisfied with her care. She decided to shift to home birth, and seek out the care of midwives. She wanted warm individualized care, someone she could relate to, a provider that trusted her wisdom to birth and respected her bodily autonomy. The search for a midwife of color came up short. Giving birth to her sweet daughter at home in 2013 led her to a journey of empowerment that aligned her to her life’s path; the midwife she looked for was looking her back in the mirror.
In 2014 she began her apprenticeship at Birthwise under its original ownership, attending home and birth center births. She returned to her hometown on the border to serve her community. There she finalized her training from 2016- 2017 at Maternidad La Luz, a MEAC accredited midwifery school. Once back in Austin she offered childbirth and lactation education as a Centering Co-facilitator and continued to attend births at a high volume birth center. Felisa became licensed in early 2020 and has come full circle.
Felisa desires to empower people to birth on their terms, and offer holistic care that honors the whole person. Her mission is to create access to the midwifery model of care to the local Spanish-speaking community. She is dedicated to decolonization and is rooted in the teachings of her ancestral traditions. Most recently, she has embodied being a lifelong student of womb healing and has had the privilege to offer traditional postpartum care along with bodywork. She intends to promote wellness and rest as an act of resistance to the systems of oppression. She desires to bring healing to the whole family, especially to LGBTQ+ and BIPOC community. She values birth as a sacred ceremony, and a transformative physiological process; knowing every individual has a birthright to receive emotional and spiritual care. Midwifery is about reciprocity, an equal exchange of time and energy, building relationships of mutual respect and trust.
Frunshana Whitaker | Board Member
Frunshana Whitaker serves as the Marketing and Communications Chair at Delivering Unto You. She graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a B.A. in Public Relations. Frunshana has years of experience working as both a Social Media and Marketing Manager. She's had an interest in birth work since her childhood but it wasn't until a few years ago that she decided she wanted to actually be a part of the birth workers community. This revelation came after she learned of the discrimination and racism black women face within the medical system. She knew then, she had to somehow do her part in educating, supporting, protecting, and empowering expecting moms. So, when the opportunity to be a part of Delivering Unto You presented itself, she was all in. Once her daughter is older she plans to become a postpartum doula and childbirth educator.
